Offset
by Kuba Chruszczewski
The offset hook is well known to spin fishermen who fish with soft lures. But this type of hook can also be very useful for fly fishermen. Using this type of hook as a base, you can tie an interesting fly that—since it’s less prone to snags—can work great in waters with plenty of snags. For example, when fishing for pike among underwater vegetation.
1. An offset hook in the vise. Here you can see how little space there is to secure additional materials, so it’s best to work carefully, using sharp scissors and strong, thin thread.

2. I attach a bundle of fairly stiff synthetic bristles with some crystal flash mixed in. I tie the material on roughly halfway along the length.

3. I fold the fabric and tie it tightly. Then, using the same method, I tie another bundle in a different color—in this case, light green.

4. By using stiff fiber, I was able to create flexible support for the subsequent elements. I’m now starting to lay down soft synthetic material—it could be "craft fur." To start with, a light-colored one,

5. Then make it progressively darker, until it’s black on the back. I add bright accents on the sides. You can now finish it off by attaching a plastic head with 3D eyes. I use a marker to draw the perch stripes.

6. You can thread metal beads onto the hook to help keep the fly securely in place.
