Polish Names of Artificial Flies, Part II

Between 1974 and 1977, Włodzimierz Arpaszew published three series of articles in *Wiadomości Wędkarskie*: „Artificial Flies”; „How to Tie an Artificial Fly”; and „Fly Lines.” Following in the footsteps of Feliks Choynowski, Józef Wyganowski, and Stanisław Koziej, Włodzimierz Arpaszew was the next person to address the topic of fly fishing in somewhat greater depth in widely available publications after World War II.

In one of the articles from the first series, Włodzimierz Arpaszew analyzed the rationale for introducing a naming system for artificial flies and standardizing it in the Polish language. The entire body of material, comprising 52 proposed Polish names, was presented in tabular form and supplemented with data describing the flies and their effectiveness in relation to the season and fish species.

I think that the material reviewed and presented so far is not just „a great story about what the willows are whispering, or how a little black boy with a spinning top chased a water strider,” but also a practical resource for that group of anglers who take a more traditional approach to fly fishing.
